Devlog: Building the Glow & Chaos in Glow-Rogue
Coming soon to Itch: Minimalist Rogue-Like Twin-Stick Shooter
Hey everyone! I’m excited to share the journey of Glow-Rogue, my minimalist, bullet-hell twin-stick shooter with a roguelike twist. Development is in full swing, and I’ve been sharing sneak peeks and progress updates over on BlueSky (check them out here: Extra Mustard's BlueSky).
Crafting the Visual Style
The idea was to use only seven colors, primarily bold teals and reds, to create a world that feels both retro and futuristic. Every enemy and player glows, giving off an electric vibe that makes the action pop, even in chaos. It's been a challenge to keep the art minimalist yet vibrant, but the glowing effect makes every moment feel alive.
Roguelike Card System
The core of Glow-Rogue's replayability lies in its card-based upgrade system. Each run feels fresh as you choose cards that can increase your ship’s stats or add unique weaponry, like turrets or satellites. Deciding which upgrades to pick adds a strategic layer to the fast-paced shooting.
Tight Controls and Scaling Challenge
Getting the controls just right has been a top priority. Whether you prefer mouse/keyboard or dual joysticks, my goal is to make sure Glow-Rogue responds fluidly to your inputs. As for difficulty, it scales dynamically, keeping you engaged and forcing you to think on your feet.
Competitive Edge
I will also be implementing an online leaderboard to add a competitive element. Each run you make could put you on top, pushing players to perfect their strategy and become legends.
Developing Glow-Rogue has been an incredible adventure so far, and there’s still more to come. Stay tuned for future updates, and join me on BlueSky for a deeper look at the game’s development!
